Carlos Galarza covers economic development, the courts, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Salem.
A native of Puerto Rico who graduated from City College of New York, Galarza has worked for various daily and weekly newspapers in Florida during the past 17 years.
He was a reporter with the Orlando Business Journal before moving to the Upstate, where he joined the Daily Journal/Messenger staff Nov. 13, 2006.

Oconee County should benefit along with the rest of the Upstate region being targeted as a “Tourism Destination Area” by the state.
In its new South Carolina Tourism Action Plan, the state wants to develop tourism clusters that would attract inland visitors and thus expand the state’s tourism industry beyond its popular coastal areas.
